  1. A bridge is a structure that provides a 
  2. continuous path or road over water, valleys,
  3. ravines, or above other roads. The basic
  4. designs and composites of these are based on
  5. the way they bear the weight of the structure
  6. and its load. Beam, or girder, bridges are 
  7. supported at each end by the ground with the
  8. weight thrusting downwards. Cantilever 
  9. bridges are a complex form of girder. 
  10. Arch bridges thrust outwards but downwards
  11. at their ends. Suspension bridges use cables
  12. under tension to pull inwards against 
  13. anchorages on either side of the span, so 
  14. that the roadway hangs from the main cables
  15. by the network of vertical cables. 
  16. The cable stayed bridge relies on diagonal 
  17. cables connected directly between the bridge
  18. deck and supporting towers at each end.
